Three adhesive types for carton board

2. Hot melt carton adhesive

Hot melt adhesive is supplied as a solid and applied in molten form with dedicated equipment. It is commonly evaluated for carton sealing and packaging lines because it sets as it cools. Suitable grades can be used in automated and semi-automated operations when application temperature, open time, substrate and equipment settings are correctly controlled.

3. Epoxy adhesive

How to choose carton board adhesive

Carton construction and surface

Identify the board thickness, flute type, surface treatment and any printing, film, UV coating or moisture-resistant treatment. These properties affect wetting and bond development. Ordinary cartons, heavy-duty cartons and coated cartons can require different solutions.

End-use conditions

Consider carton weight, expected handling, storage, transport and exposure to moisture. Do not assume a general-purpose adhesive will meet a demanding condition without supporting technical evidence and testing.

Production speed

For high-speed automated operations, evaluate adhesive setting time, equipment capability and the required open time. A suitable hot melt system may be considered where rapid processing is needed; other systems may suit slower or manual operations.

Application and quality checks

Before starting a production run, inspect the carton-board surfaces and verify adhesive application coverage. Run sample cartons through the intended packing, storage and handling steps, then review bond consistency. Reassess the system whenever board suppliers, coatings, box dimensions, line speed or environmental conditions change.
