Edge banding glue granules are solid hot melt adhesive pellets used in suitable edge banding machines. They melt in the glue pot, are applied to the panel edge and develop handling strength as the band is pressed on and the adhesive cools. TECHBOND explains pellet types, visible glue-line colors and practical setup checks for industrial wood panels.

What are edge banding glue granules?
Many conventional edge banding pellets are based on ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA), although other hot melt chemistries are also available. Pellet shape, size, viscosity and operating temperature depend on the grade. The pellets should not be called silicone adhesive simply because they are supplied as small solid granules.
In an edge bander, controlled heat melts the adhesive for roller or nozzle application. The machine then joins an edge band to the board under pressure. A strong, neat bond depends on the adhesive, board, band, temperature, coating amount, feed speed and pressure working together.

Pellet grades can differ in color and processing properties.
Key properties of an edge banding pellet
The correct processing temperature is product-specific. The broad range sometimes quoted for hot melts is not an instruction for every pellet. Follow the technical data sheet and verify the temperature at the glue pot and applicator. Running too cool may give poor wetting; excessive heat or long residence time can degrade or discolor some formulations.
- Viscosity and wetting: the melt should spread consistently across the prepared panel edge without excessive squeeze-out.
- Open time and setting speed: the adhesive must remain workable until the band is pressed on, then set at the line’s feed rate.
- Bond and service conditions: evaluate peel strength and appearance after conditioning, including relevant heat and humidity exposure.
- Clean processing: assess stringing, charring, glue-pot residue and roller cleanliness on the actual equipment.
For details on temperature control, see how temperature affects hot melt adhesive.

Match pellet performance and machine settings to the band and board.
Choosing a glue-line color
Color affects the appearance of the finished edge, especially where the joint is visible. Common options include white, natural or yellowish, brown, dark and translucent formulations. The match should be checked on a finished sample under the lighting in which the furniture will be used.
- White: a possible choice for light or white boards and edge bands when the joint shade matches.
- Brown or dark: may reduce the contrast of a glue line on darker décors.
- Natural or yellowish: may suit some wood tones, subject to a visual trial.
- Translucent: can be useful for selected décors but does not make every joint invisible or suit every band.
Color is only one criterion. Compare adhesion, heat behavior and finish with the actual PVC, ABS, veneer or other band and the specific MDF or particleboard. TECHBOND’s MDF edge banding adhesive guide explains the main adhesive options.
Where are glue granules used?
The main application discussed here is bonding a compatible edge band to a wood-based furniture panel. Hot melt granules are also formulated for other industries, including packaging, bookbinding and textile assembly, but an edge banding grade is not automatically suitable for those jobs. Select a separate product grade for each process and substrate pair.
Practical setup and maintenance checks
- Confirm materials: record the board, edge-band type, surface finish and any primer or pretreatment.
- Follow the grade’s settings: use the specified melt temperature, feed speed, open time and pressure. Verify actual readings on the machine.
- Control coat weight: apply enough adhesive for a continuous bond without an excessive visible line.
- Keep the system clean: protect pellets from dust, maintain the applicator and follow the approved cleaning procedure.
- Test the finished edge: inspect the bond, glue line and resistance to the conditions expected in use.
Kitchen furniture may face greater heat and moisture exposure than some other cabinets. Select a grade with demonstrated performance for the whole edge assembly; melt temperature alone does not establish heat or moisture resistance. For demanding applications, compare other technologies as well as conventional EVA pellets.
Discuss edge banding glue granules with TECHBOND
TECHBOND can review your edge band, board, machine and target finish when selecting edge banding glue granules. Share material samples and operating settings so the proposed grade can be trialed on your production line. Request the technical and safety data sheets for the exact product before use.
