How should you choose an industrial adhesive? The right industrial adhesive should be selected according to the material, joint design, equipment, production speed and service conditions of the finished product—not price alone.

1. Identify the materials to be bonded

Start by identifying the bonding surfaces: wood, paper, carton, fabric, foam, plastic or another material. Each surface has different absorbency, roughness, moisture level and surface energy. An adhesive that works well for paper may not be suitable for plastic or coated surfaces.

  • Wood: consider the wood species, moisture level, joint design and moisture-resistance requirements.
  • Paper and packaging: consider machine speed, absorbency, open time and appearance.

3. Define the product’s service conditions

Will the finished product be used indoors, in a humid environment, outdoors or where temperatures change? These conditions affect the required bond strength, moisture resistance, drying time and long-term performance. A product name or adhesive class alone does not guarantee suitability for every design.

4. Check the technical criteria

  • Viscosity and application method.
  • Open time, pressing time and time to reach the required bond strength.
  • Adhesion on the actual production materials.
  • Colour, odour and appearance requirements.
  • Compatibility with equipment and storage conditions.
  • Current TDS, SDS and application instructions.

5. Why should you test before mass production?

Sample testing helps identify edge lifting, adhesive penetration, unsuitable drying time or appearance problems before the adhesive enters full production. Test on the actual materials, equipment and conditions whenever possible, then record the results for comparison and process improvement.
