Industrial Adhesives: PVAc, EVA & Hot Melt

By October 10, 2026No Comments

Industrial adhesives include water-based formulations supplied as liquids and hot melt formulations supplied as solids. They are selected to bond particular materials under specific production conditions. Common applications include woodworking, paper and packaging, labels, mattresses and personal care products. This guide introduces the main groups and the factors to check before choosing a grade.

What is an industrial adhesive?

An industrial adhesive creates a bond between two surfaces as part of a manufacturing process. Its chemistry, form and application method vary. Selection depends on the substrate, equipment, line speed, required bond strength and the product’s conditions of use.

Industrial adhesives are supplied in different forms for different production processes.

No single adhesive suits every material or environment. A sample trial and the technical data sheet should guide the final selection.

Common types of industrial adhesive

TECHBOND develops adhesive solutions for different industries. The categories below describe the adhesive technology; performance still depends on the individual formulation.

PVAc water-based adhesive

PVAc adhesive is commonly supplied as a milky water-based dispersion. Appropriate grades can bond porous materials such as paper, cardboard and wood. Viscosity, setting speed and moisture resistance vary by product.

  • Often applied at room temperature with rollers, nozzles or other suitable equipment.
  • The bond develops as water is absorbed by the material or evaporates.
  • Check the recommended application temperature and storage conditions in the product data sheet.
  • Use the safety data sheet for handling and ventilation guidance; do not assume every PVAc formulation has the same safety classification.

Hot melt adhesive

Hot melt adhesive is heated in appropriate equipment, applied while molten and forms a bond as it cools. Different grades are used for packaging, woodworking, bookbinding, labels and assembly. The required temperature, open time and application method must match the machine and substrate.

  • Available in different colors and physical forms, depending on the grade.
  • Setting can be rapid, which may suit automated production.
  • Bond performance, odor and heat resistance depend on formulation and operating conditions.
  • Follow the technical and safety instructions, including precautions for hot equipment.

EVA hot melt adhesive

Ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) is a polymer base used in some hot melt adhesives. Suitable EVA grades serve packaging, bookbinding and woodworking applications. Softening behavior, flexibility, filler content and water resistance vary with the full formulation; these properties should be checked against the actual materials. See TECHBOND’s EVA hot melt guide.

Spray-applied adhesive

Spray application is a method rather than one adhesive chemistry. A compatible formulation may be sprayed onto foam, wood, laminates or other substrates using suitable equipment. Ask for the product’s application viscosity, spray pattern, ventilation requirements and substrate compatibility. Consumption savings cannot be assumed without a controlled production trial.

For woodworking applications, compare the adhesive families with the woodworking adhesive solutions and test the chosen grade on your materials.

How to choose and purchase an industrial adhesive

Before requesting a quotation, define the two materials to be bonded, their surface condition, the application equipment, line speed, expected service temperature and required bond strength. Request technical and safety documents and evaluate a sample under normal production conditions. Compare the total applied cost, including adhesive consumption, rejects, cleaning and downtime.
