Product Label Adhesives: Types, Applications & Selection

By October 10, 2026No Comments

Product label adhesives attach paper or film labels to containers and packages. The right adhesive depends on the label material, container surface, labeling equipment, line speed, storage conditions and end-use requirements. TECHBOND Vietnam offers hot-melt and water-based options for different labeling processes.

What is a label adhesive?

A label adhesive bonds a printed label to a product or its packaging so that information such as ingredients, batch details and barcodes remains legible. Performance should be assessed on the actual label and container, including how the bond behaves during filling, transport and storage.

Common types of label adhesive

Hot-melt and water-based adhesives are common choices. Neither type is suitable for every label or production line; sample testing is essential.

Hot-melt adhesives for bottle and container labels

Hot-melt adhesives can be considered for high-speed labeling of suitable glass and plastic containers. Selection depends on the label, including OPP, BOPP, PVC and coated materials, as well as the container surface and application temperature. Confirm heat stability, tack, clean running and removability where required.

Different containers and labels require different adhesive performance

Potential applications include beverage and other consumer-product containers. Any claim about odor, safety or food-contact suitability must be confirmed for the specific product and regulatory use case.

Water-based label adhesives

Water-based adhesives can provide controlled label pick-up and bonding on compatible automatic labeling equipment. Drying rate and adhesion depend on the formulation, substrate and process conditions. Film-coated and low-energy labels should be tested rather than assumed compatible.

Applications may include labels for sauces, household cleaners, veterinary products and other packaged goods when the adhesive has been validated for the packaging system. See TECHBOND’s paper and packaging adhesive solutions for related products.

Choosing a label adhesive supplier

Ask the supplier to review your label stock, container material, machine settings, line speed and storage environment. Request a technical data sheet and run a production trial. Compare overall performance, waste and maintenance requirements alongside purchase price.

Product quality and consistency

Check sample results and batch-to-batch consistency against measurable targets such as label placement, bond strength and clean operation.

Cost and technical support

Evaluate adhesive use per unit, downtime, rejects and supplier support to understand the total cost of labeling.
