What is paper laminating adhesive?
Paper lamination is the process of bonding an additional paper layer to make a finished product stronger, more rigid or thicker. The adhesive used for this process is generally called paper laminating adhesive.
Paper laminating adhesive is commonly based on polyvinyl acetate (PVAc). It is supplied as a liquid adhesive and bonds compatible surfaces when applied as a thin, continuous film. Depending on the grade, the formulation may also contain additives such as surfactants, water-resistance agents and preservatives.

Paper laminating adhesive can be used with a range of paper and board materials, including duplex board, coated paper, corrugated cardboard, book covers, paperboard and other compatible paper substrates. The appropriate grade should be selected for the material, coating and production process.
Key properties of paper laminating adhesive
- Strong adhesion: It can bond multiple layers of compatible paper and board, helping create firm laminated structures.
- Drying performance: Suitable grades offer drying or setting behaviour appropriate to the intended manual or machine process.
- Adjustable viscosity: Where the Technical Data Sheet permits dilution, viscosity can be adjusted for the application method. Dilution must be validated because it can affect drying and bond strength.
- Different PVAc solids contents: Paper laminating adhesives are available in grades suited to both manual lamination and machine lamination.
- Water-based formulation: PVAc paper adhesives are commonly chosen for paper-bonding applications because of their handling and bonding properties.
Which adhesive is suitable for paper lamination?

- Manual lamination: Adhesives with approximately 28–35% PVAc solids are commonly selected for hand lamination. Their working time can allow adjustment of the paper layers before the adhesive sets.
- Machine lamination: Higher-solids grades, typically about 40–60% PVAc solids, can be selected for automated production where higher tack, faster drying and paper stiffness are required.
PVAc paper laminating adhesive
- PVAc is the principal component; the adhesive is normally a milky-white liquid.
- Suitable grades dry quickly and can be used directly when compatible with the production process.
- Besides paper bonding, selected PVAc white-glue products can be used on compatible wood, natural and engineered wood, veneer, tobacco-packaging, construction and automotive applications. Always confirm suitability with the relevant Technical Data Sheet.

Safety and handling
Paper laminating adhesive is an industrial chemical product. Avoid direct contact with skin, eyes and mucous membranes, and follow the product label and Safety Data Sheet for the specific adhesive used.
- Wear suitable gloves, a mask and eye protection where required by the product instructions and workplace risk assessment.
- Avoid contact with skin, mouth, nose and eyes.
- Store adhesive in a dry, well-ventilated area according to its product documentation.
Notes on dilution
Paper laminating adhesive is supplied as a liquid. The water-to-adhesive ratio affects viscosity and performance, and depends on the PVAc solids content and the selected grade. Consult the current Technical Data Sheet before dilution, then test the mix on the actual paper and production process.
The Vietnamese source notes that a 1:1 adhesive-to-water mix is sometimes used. This ratio must not be applied universally: validate it against the selected product specifications and required finished-product performance.
