Water-Based Adhesive for Paper Bags: Uses and Selection Guide

By October 10, 2026No Comments

Water-based adhesive for paper bags is used to bond side seams, bottoms and, with a suitable formulation, handle components. A good bond depends on the paper, coating, application method and production speed. This guide explains the characteristics, uses and selection criteria for this adhesive.

Characteristics of water-based paper bag adhesive

Many white adhesives used for paper bags are based on polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) dispersed in water. They are typically milky white liquids. Formulations can be adjusted for viscosity, open time, setting speed and final bond strength. Suitability for uncoated, coated or laminated paper must be confirmed with the specific product and substrates.

Milky white water-based adhesive for paper bag production

Water-based white adhesive can be used in suitable paper bag production processes.

Drying and setting times vary with the adhesive grade, paper absorbency, application amount, pressure, temperature and humidity. The figures sometimes quoted for other white glues should not be treated as specifications for every paper bag line. Check the product technical data sheet and run trials on the actual equipment.

Points to check when selecting a paper bag adhesive:

  • Adhesion: Test the side seam, bottom and handle bonds on the intended paper and coating.
  • Working speed: Match open time and setting speed to the machine and pressing process.
  • Appearance: Check for visible glue marks, seepage and warping on thin paper.
  • Handling: Confirm viscosity and compatibility with rollers, nozzles or manual application.
  • Storage and safety: Follow the product label and safety data sheet; do not dilute with water unless the manufacturer permits it.

Applications in paper bag production

Adhesive application on a kraft paper bag

Paper bag adhesive is selected for the bag material and bonding position.

Water-based adhesives may be used for kraft paper bag side seams and bottom pasting, as well as paper-to-paper lamination. Handle attachment can require different tack and setting behavior; some processes use hot melt instead. The right adhesive depends on the paper grade, any film or coating, bag load and production speed. TECHBOND’s paper bag adhesive guide explains these bonding positions in more detail.

PVAc adhesives also have applications in paperboard, labels and woodworking, but a grade intended for one substrate should not automatically be used for another. For a broader overview, see paper and packaging adhesives. Avoid adding water to extend the product or change drying speed without approval: dilution can change viscosity, solids content and final bond strength.

How to choose a suitable adhesive

Selecting an adhesive for paper bag manufacturing

Select the adhesive against actual paper, machine and performance requirements.

When comparing suppliers, request the technical data sheet and information on recommended application conditions. Share the paper type, coating, machine speed, application equipment and required bag strength. Test samples for seam strength, handle performance, appearance and stability after storage. Compare total applied cost, including adhesive consumption, waste and downtime, as well as the price per kilogram.
