What is hot melt adhesive?

Hot melt adhesive is a thermoplastic bonding solution for many industrial applications, especially packaging and manufacturing. It is solid at room temperature in the form of pellets, sticks, blocks or cakes. A dedicated heating unit melts the adhesive before it is applied to the material surface. As it cools, it solidifies and forms a strong bond.

Common hot melt types

Hot melt adhesives are classified by composition, viscosity, melting temperature, hardness and durability. Common choices include PUR hot melt, polyolefin (PO) hot melt for difficult surfaces such as PE, OPP, BOPP and UV-coated materials, and EVA hot melt, which offers good adhesion and flexibility.

Automatic equipment and operating process

Automatic hot melt systems generally use either a spray applicator or a roller coater. Spray systems provide accurate application for labeling and packaging. Roller systems are common for carton forming and bookbinding.

1. Load the adhesive: pellets, sticks or blocks are fed into the machine through a pump, screw or heated supply system.
2. Set activation temperature: melt the adhesive according to its technical data sheet and keep it liquid and ready for application.
3. Apply adhesive: spray or coat the molten adhesive onto the surfaces to be bonded.
4. Bond: the adhesive cools and hardens quickly, creating a firm connection between surfaces.

Applications

Hot melt adhesive is used in automatic packaging and label lines for cartons, plastic bags and paper bags. In woodworking, it is used for edge banding with veneer and PVC edging. Other uses include bonding electronic components and consumer products such as toys and wet tissue box lids.

Use and storage precautions

• Choose the right grade: consider the materials, melting temperature and viscosity.
• Control temperature: excessive heat can make adhesive too fluid and wasteful, while insufficient heat prevents proper melting and bonding.
• Store correctly: keep adhesive in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight. The recommended storage range is generally 10–25°C, subject to the product data sheet.
• Clean equipment: clean automatic machines regularly to maintain stable output and prevent blockages.
