Hot Melt Adhesive for Automatic Machines: Use and Storage Guide

By September 12, 2026September 25th, 2026No Comments

Hot melt adhesive for automatic machines must match the materials, applicator and production cycle. This guide covers the main adhesive families, application systems, operating steps and storage checks described in TECHBOND’s Vietnamese article. Use the current technical data sheet (TDS) for the selected grade and the equipment manufacturer’s instructions when establishing production settings.

What is hot melt adhesive?

Hot melt adhesive is heated until it can be applied to a bonding surface. Conventional thermoplastic grades develop a bond as they cool. Products may be supplied as granules, sticks, blocks or other forms, depending on the grade and feed system. Confirm that the selected form is compatible with your machine before loading it.

Match the hot melt adhesive grade to the application equipment and production requirements.

Why use hot melt on an automatic line?

A suitable adhesive and correctly adjusted application system can support repeatable placement and timely handling of bonded parts. The required setting speed, bond performance and coating pattern depend on the process. These benefits should be confirmed on the actual materials rather than inferred from the adhesive family alone.

Common adhesive families

  • EVA: ethylene vinyl acetate-based formulations are available for different bonding applications. Check the specific grade’s viscosity, working time and service requirements.
  • PO: polyolefin-based formulations provide another selection option. For coated paper, PE, OPP, BOPP or other surfaces, test the exact material and coating with the proposed grade.
  • PUR: reactive polyurethane hot melts require equipment and handling procedures compatible with the product. For moisture-curing grades, distinguish initial handling strength from the subsequent curing stage and follow the supplier’s moisture-protection instructions.

Automatic application systems

Common delivery methods include nozzle application and roller coating. Depending on the system, nozzles can produce beads, dots or spray patterns, while rollers transfer adhesive across a defined contact area. Select the method according to the bond geometry, material and equipment capabilities; not every grade is suitable for every delivery method.

The adhesive supply, heating and application components must work together. Review the required feed form, viscosity range and output with the machine supplier. For the meaning of the main properties, see our hot melt adhesive technical specifications guide.

5 steps for using hot melt adhesive for automatic machines

  1. Confirm the material and load the correct grade. Check the label, batch and packaging condition. Use the machine’s approved loading method and prevent contamination of the adhesive supply.
  2. Establish the operating temperature. Follow the grade’s TDS and the equipment instructions for the melter, hoses and applicator where fitted. Allow the system to reach its specified operating condition before evaluating application quality.
  3. Set adhesive delivery. Adjust the approved application quantity, pattern and placement to the bond area. Check coverage and consistency on representative samples.
  4. Join and hold the surfaces. Match the time between application and assembly to the adhesive’s working time. Provide the contact and compression required by the process before handling the product.
  5. Inspect and record the result. Check bond consistency, alignment and appearance using the application’s acceptance method. Record settings and repeat the trial after a material, grade or process change.

Applications on automatic production lines

Packaging and labels

Suitable hot melt grades may be used for carton closing, paper packaging and label applications. Match the adhesive to coatings, printing and end-use conditions. Our carton adhesive selection guide explains the main checks for packaging lines.

Woodworking and edge banding

In panel processing, hot melt can bond compatible edging materials, including selected veneer or plastic edging systems. Check the panel, edging treatment and machine settings together. See our edge banding troubleshooting guide for common defects and process checks.

Edge banding is one application of hot melt adhesive in wood processing.

Industrial assembly and consumer products

Other applications may include component assembly and selected consumer-product parts, such as wet-wipe pack lids. Suitability depends on the exact materials, exposure conditions and product requirements. Ask the supplier to assess the application before choosing a grade.

Use, maintenance and storage checks

  • Control temperature: use the recommended operating range. If delivery or bonding is inconsistent, check the actual process conditions before changing temperature.
  • Keep the system clean: follow the equipment and adhesive supplier’s approved cleaning procedure. Inspect delivery components and use compatible cleaning products.
  • Plan shutdown and restart: follow product-specific instructions for breaks and extended stops, including any requirements for reactive adhesives.
  • Store correctly: keep material in its original closed packaging, protected from contamination and under the label or TDS conditions. Follow the stated shelf life rather than applying a universal storage-temperature range.
  • Follow handling guidance: use the product safety data sheet and site procedures for protective measures when operating heated equipment.
