Honeycomb Paper Adhesive: How to Choose the Right Grade

By October 12, 2026No Comments

Selecting the right honeycomb paper adhesive helps a manufacturer make light, strong packaging panels with consistent production quality. This guide explains the honeycomb structure, why water-based PVAc can be suitable, and which bonding and process requirements to test before choosing a grade.

What is honeycomb paper used for?

Honeycomb paper is a cellular material made by bonding sheets of paper into an array of hexagonal cells. A core can be combined with facing sheets to make a lightweight panel. The structure helps distribute loads and can provide cushioning, although performance depends on paper grade, cell size, panel design and manufacturing quality.

Packaging applications include protective inserts, dividers, pallets and pallet pads, and panels for heavier goods. Honeycomb cores are also used in some furniture and interior products. For all these uses, the adhesive must hold the paper layers and any facings together during converting, handling and service. If the bond fails, the panel may lose the strength expected from its cellular design.

PVAc adhesive for honeycomb paper production

Polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) is commonly supplied as a water-based adhesive dispersion for porous materials such as paper and wood. It can be a practical choice for paper-to-paper bonding because the adhesive can wet the paper surface and form a bond as water leaves the joint. The exact formulation, viscosity and solids content still need to match the machine and paper stock. Learn more about polyvinyl acetate and compare TECHBOND’s industrial adhesive types.

A water-based system can avoid the solvent evaporation associated with some other adhesive technologies. It does, however, introduce drying and moisture-control requirements. There is no universal PVAc grade for every honeycomb line: the coating method, paper absorbency, production speed and target strength determine which product should be evaluated.

How to choose a honeycomb paper adhesive

Bond strength on the actual paper

Start with trial bonds on the production paper, including any recycled content, coatings or surface treatments. The adhesive should hold the expanded core and any face sheets without unwanted delamination. Test the finished panel under the loads it will meet in packing and transport, rather than judging only the freshly bonded sheet.

Open time and drying speed

The adhesive needs enough open time for the paper layers to meet and form a reliable bond. It also needs to dry or set at a rate compatible with line speed and downstream cutting or stacking. Drying time changes with coat weight, airflow, temperature and paper absorbency. Too much adhesive can slow drying and increase paper distortion; too little may leave weak joints.

Compression performance and durability

Honeycomb packaging often supports weight or absorbs shocks. The adhesive should help maintain cell geometry when the product is compressed or handled. Evaluate bond integrity together with the paper’s own strength, because a strong glue cannot compensate for a weak or unsuitable paper grade.

Humidity and temperature conditions

Paper and water-based adhesives can respond to moisture. Identify the expected warehouse, transport and end-use conditions, then test panels after relevant humidity and temperature exposure. Do not assume every PVAc formulation offers the same moisture resistance. If the product will be used in demanding conditions, discuss a suitable grade and validation method with the supplier.

Safety and environmental requirements

Review the adhesive’s safety documentation and the requirements of the intended package. Where food contact, recycling or other regulated use is involved, confirm suitability for the specific construction and market with the relevant product documentation. A water-based label by itself does not establish compliance or recyclability of a finished package.

Evaluating a TECHBOND solution

TECHBOND supplies industrial adhesives for paper and packaging as well as other manufacturing sectors. Share the paper specification, core geometry, line speed, application equipment and required strength with the technical team. A production trial can then check coating consistency, drying behavior and finished-panel performance before a honeycomb paper adhesive grade is selected.
