Milk Glue vs. Hot Melt Adhesive for Carton Box Bonding

Choosing the right adhesive is important when bonding carton boxes. Milk glue, also called PVA or water-based adhesive, and hot melt adhesive are two common options. Their performance, application method and suitable production conditions are different.

Milk glue for carton boxes

Milk glue is water-based and is usually applied by a roller, nozzle or glue wheel. It offers good adhesion to paper and cardboard, a long open time and economical operating cost. It is suitable for many carton lines where the material can absorb water and the production speed allows drying time.

Hot melt adhesive for carton boxes

Hot melt adhesive is solid at room temperature and is melted before application. It cools and sets quickly, making it suitable for high-speed automatic packaging lines. It provides strong initial bonding and works well when fast handling is required.

• Setting speed: hot melt sets in seconds, while milk glue needs time for water to evaporate or be absorbed.
• Equipment: milk glue uses pumps, rollers or nozzles; hot melt requires a heated tank and temperature-controlled applicator.
• Material and process: milk glue is suitable for absorbent paper and cardboard; hot melt is useful when quick bonding or difficult production conditions require it.
• Cost and maintenance: milk glue is generally economical, while hot melt systems need heating and regular cleaning.

How to choose

Select adhesive according to the carton material, machine type, line speed, bond strength and working environment. Run a small production test and follow the product technical data sheet before mass production.
