Polyolefin Hotmelt Adhesives: Types, Features & Applications

By October 8, 2026October 10th, 2026No Comments

Hotmelt adhesives are currently widely used in various industries due to their many outstanding advantages and affordable prices. Among them, PO hotmelt adhesives have a broader scope of application owing to their high thermal stability and excellent cold resistance. In the article below, TECHBOND will provide you with useful information about this product line.

Concept of Polyolefin Hotmelt Adhesives

What is Polyolefin Hotmelt Adhesive?

PO hotmelt adhesive is an adhesive whose main component is polyolefin—a polymer produced from the polymerization reaction of simple olefins (also known as alkenes with the general formula CnH2n) as monomers. Most polyolefin production is carried out on an industrial scale using catalysts during the polymerization process. These catalysts include chromium-based catalysts, Ziegler-Natta catalysts, single-site metallocene catalysts, and post-metallocene SSC catalysts.

The polyolefins used as raw materials for hotmelt adhesives have low crystallinity and an amorphous structure. This characteristic helps reduce both the melting temperature and viscosity. Furthermore, due to low crystallinity, adhesives made from these polyolefins possess strong adhesion capabilities with low-polarity materials.

Classification of Polyolefin Hotmelt Adhesives

PO hotmelt adhesives are classified into two main types: amorphous poly alpha olefin (APAO) and metallocene polyolefin (mPO).

APAO-Based Adhesives

This type of adhesive is formed through the copolymerization of alpha-olefins, including propylene, ethylene, and 1-butene, combined with a Ziegler-Natta catalyst. Amorphous poly alpha olefin has lower initial tack compared to ethylene vinyl acetate hotmelt adhesive (EVA Hotmelt). However, this adhesive line offers better stability and thermal resistance than EVA adhesives.

mPO-Based Adhesives

mPO-based adhesive is a polyolefin product created from a chemical reaction involving a single-site metallocene catalyst. Metallocene catalysts allow more precise control over polymer structure and molecular weight, helping manufacturers tailor flexibility and adhesive performance. Metallocene polyolefin operates across a wide temperature range. Additionally, the metallocene catalyst helps enhance adhesion and thermal stability.

Outstanding Characteristics and Applications of Polyolefin Hotmelt Adhesives

PO hotmelt adhesive is an indispensable component playing a vital role in production lines equipped with spray nozzles or hotmelt glue guns with nozzles. This product line is preferred because it possesses many superior characteristics that deliver optimal bonding strength for applications with difficult-to-bond or coated surfaces. Below are the practical characteristics and applications of PO-based hotmelt adhesives.

Characteristics of PO Hotmelt Adhesives

Polyolefin-based hotmelt adhesives (PO hotmelt) feature the following characteristics:

  • Operates across a wide temperature range as formulation recipes can be adjusted to suit specific applications, from very short open times (a few seconds) to very long ones.
  • Polyolefin-based adhesives possess excellent bonding capability on non-polar, hard-to-adhere surfaces or coated surfaces such as OPP, PE, UV, metallized films, etc.
  • PO hotmelt offers good moisture and water vapor resistance, making it suitable for high-humidity environments.
  • Polyolefin hotmelt exhibits good chemical resistance, specifically against polar solutions depending on the formulation and chemical exposure. Check the technical data sheet and test the actual substrate and operating conditions before use.
  • Good heat resistance and thermal durability, low viscosity, long service life, and performs well under various environmental conditions.
  • Some formulations offer low odor; follow the product safety data sheet and ensure suitable ventilation during application.
  • Suitable formulations can reduce charring and residue when operated within the recommended temperature range, helping simplify cleaning.

Applications of PO Hotmelt Adhesives

Due to their numerous outstanding properties, Polyolefin hotmelt adhesives are widely applied across various industries. Among them, the industry that uses this product line most extensively is the packaging industry, including carton boxes, paper gluing, non-woven fabrics, metallized films, etc.

As the economy continues to develop, industrial manufacturing has also made significant advancements. Consequently, product quality requirements have become increasingly demanding with rigorous inspection procedures. The packaging industry is no exception. Beyond continuously innovating and diversifying designs to attract customers, packaging quality must also be steadily upgraded, as it serves as the face and primary attraction at first glance.

Polyolefin-based adhesives have become one of the top choices in packaging production. Possessing advantages such as flexibility, softness, high adhesion, and ease of application, the adhesive seamlessly bonds product surfaces together. At the same time, it enhances cold resistance and reduces coating weight per product, making it ideal for sealing boxes in frozen seafood packaging or attaching wet wipe plastic lids.
